My name is Charlotte Turner, daughter of the founders of the Muisbosskerm: Edward and Elmien Turner. My brother Ian and my aim with this new venture MUISBOSSKERM TOURS is to share our passion and knowledge of the West Coast with anybody who would like to visit the West Coast but don’t know where to start.
The story of the Muisbosskerm…
The Muisbosskerm Open Air Restaurant was the brainchild of my father Edward Turner. He build this “skerm” (shelter) in 1985 with “muisbos” (an indigenous bush growing freely in the area) as a place to braai and socialize with friends and family after catching fish and crayfish. It was never his intention to start a business. Rather to surprise family and friends and to entertain them in an environment with an unbeatable atmosphere and view. It became a business by accident in 1986 when a friend of his from the Rooibos Tea Company in Clanwilliam asked if he could bring a group of 15 Japanese clients for dinner. 22 years later… and the Muisbosskerm is still going from strength to strength. My father Edward and especially my mother Elmien are still involved in the business, but to a lesser degree. My two brothers Tertius and Ian are involved in the family business on a fulltime basis. Alternately one of them is always at the Muisbosskerm to welcome and entertain guests, just as our father and mother did for many years.
